Senator DeWitte Offers Petition Urging Local Control for School Boards on Student and Staff Safety

Senator Donald DeWitte (R-St. Charles) is offering his constituents an opportunity to voice their support for local control in key COVID-19 response decisions. The new petition specifically suggests that local control should be granted to individual school boards when it comes to decisions regarding the safety of students and staff.

“Since Governor Pritzker announced his Pre-k-12 mask mandate for all Illinois public and private schools, my phones and email have been flooded with contacts from angry parents,” said Sen. DeWitte. “Throughout the pandemic, I have urged the Governor to include the legislative branch in decisions regarding COVID-19. Those calls for joint decision-making from my colleagues and me continue, but whether you agree with the mask mandate or not, our local boards of education should be making these decisions. Additionally, any executive order that affects our local communities should be made in consultation with the elected Senators and Representatives, who serve as the local voice.”
